Longman

Longman (spr. lóngmän), Thomas Norton, engl. Verleger, geb. 1771, gest. 29. Aug. 1842, ererbte 1797 die von seinem Großonkel Thomas L. (geb. 1699, gest. 1755) 1724 in London gegründete Verlagsbuchhandlung, die er zu hoher Blüte brachte. 1824 nahm er B. Green als Teilhaber der Firma auf, die unter seinen Söhnen Thomas L. (gest. 1879) und William L. (gest. 1877) in »Longmans, Green and Co.« geändert wurde. Gegenwärtige Besitzer sind außer W. E. Green (dem Sohn von B. Green, gest. 1869) die Söhne von Thomas und William L.: Thomas Norton, Charles James, George Henry und Hubert Harry L. Filialen bestehen in New York und Bombay. Aus dem Verlage gingen außer Erbauungs-, Schul-, Jugendschriften, medizinischen Werken etc. namentlich hervor: Ephraim Chambers' »Cyclopaedia« (2 Bde., 1728; zuletzt in 5. Aufl. 1746), Rees' »New Cyclopaedia« (45 Bde., 1802–19), Lardners »Cabinet Cyclopaedia« (133 Bde., 1829–46); die »Badminton library of sports and pastimes« (1885–1902, 30 Bde.); Werke von Macaulay, J. Stuart Mill, Beaconsfield, Max Müller, Tyndall, Fronde, Lecky, Gardiner u.a.
