Lecky, William Edward Hartpole, engl. Historiker, geb. 26. März 1838 in Dublin, gest. 23. Okt. 1903, erzogen im Trinity College zu Dublin, wandte sich kulturhistorischen Studien zu und erwarb sich, nachdem er als Schriftsteller auf diesem Gebiet zuerst 1861 mit dem anonym publizierten Werk »The leaders of public opinion in Ireland« (2. Aufl. 1871, neue Ausg. 1903; deutsch: »Vier historische Essays: Swift, Flood, Grattan und O'Connell«, Posen 1873), einer Geschichte der rationalistischen Opposition gegen positive Religion, mit Anwendung von Buckles Methode aufgetreten war, besonders durch folgende drei Werke einen Namen: »History of the rise and influence of the spirit of rationalism in Europe« (1865, 2 Bde.; wiederholt aufgelegt, zuletzt 1899; deutsch von Jolowicz, 2. Aufl., Leipz. 1873, 2 Bde.), die manche scharfe Entgegnungen von orthodoxer Seite hervorrief; »History of European morals from Augustus to Charlemagne« (1869, 12. Aufl. 1899, 2 Bde.; deutsch, 2. Aufl., Leipz. 1879) und »History of England in the eighteenth century« (1878–1890, 8 Bde., mehrfach aufgelegt; neue Ausg. 1892 in 12 Bänden, davon Bd. 8–12 u. d. T.: »Ireland in the eighteenth century«; deutsch von Löwe, Leipz. 1879–83, Bd. 1–4). 1891 erschien von ihm ein Band Gedichte. Vier Jahre später wurde er für die Universität Dublin ins Unterhaus gewählt, wo er sich der Partei der liberalen Unionisten anschloß, und 1897 zum Mitglied des Geheimen Rates ernannt. 1896 veröffentlichte er eine kritische Geschichte der parlamentarischen Entwickelung in England u. d. T. »Democracy and liberty« (2 Bde., neue Ausg. 1899), 1900 Erörterungen über ethische Probleme des täglichen Lebens u. d. T. »The map of life, conduct and character«.
