Okt. 1891 in St. Petersburg, machte sich um die Kenntnis Zentralasiens verdient, indem er 1873 den untern Amu und den Aralsee befuhr und 1876 eine Expedition in den Pamir unternahm, auf der er mit Lebedew bis zum Großen Karakul vordrang. Er schrieb in russischer Sprache: »Mittelasien«, »Bokhara«, »Das Chanat von Chiwa«.
