Heartwater

Heartwater (engl., spr. hārt-ŭaoter, »Herzwasser«), eine in Afrika bei edlern Schafen und Ziegen, jedoch nicht bei den wilden Wiederkäuern vorkommende Krankheit, die durch einen Blutparasiten verursacht wird, der durch blutsaugende Zecken von einem zum andern Tier übertragen werden soll, wie dies bei der Hämoglobinurie und dem Texasfieber (s. d.) der Rinder geschieht. Die schwarze Lungenseuche oder Gallseuche der Rinder und auch die Pferdesterbe (s. d.) soll mit H. identisch sein, und es soll durch gegenseitige Blutübertragungen vom kranken Schaf auf Rind und Pferd und umgekehrt sich jede der drei Krankheiten erzeugen lassen. Diese Ansicht bedarf noch weiterer Bestätigung.
