Hartford (spr. hártförd), mehrere Städte in Nordamerika: 1) Hauptstadt des Staates Connecticut und der Grafschaft H., am schiffbaren Connecticut, der sich hier mit dem Park River vereinigt und in den Enfield-Schnellen starke Wasserkraft bietet, Bahnknotenpunkt, mit schönem Kapitol, Rathaus, Athenäum mit Gemäldegalerie und Bibliothek, Trinity College (25 Dozenten, 120 Studierende), theologischem Seminar, Irrenanstalt, Taubstummeninstitut, Hospital und (1900) 79,850 Einw., darunter 14,456 im Ausland (2140 in Deutschland) Geborne. Die Stadt ist Sitz großer Versicherungsgesellschaften (Aktiva 150 Mill. Doll.) und hat bedeutende Fabriken für Maschinen, Feuerwaffen (Colts), Wagen, Fahrräder, Nähmaschinen, Metallwaren, Papier, Zigarren, Wollenstoffe etc. (1900: 888 Betriebe mit 13,363 Arbeitern und für 31,145,715 Doll. Waren). Ein holländisches Fort wurde hier 1633 angelegt und 1636 durch englische Ansiedler die Stadt gegründet. – 2) Stadt in Vermont, Grafschaft Windsor, am Connecticut und White River, Bahnknotenpunkt, mit Fabriken, Sägemühlen und (1900) 3817 Einw.
