Gilder, William Henry, amerikan. Journalist und Polarfahrer, geb. 16. Aug. 1838 in Philadelphia, gest. 5. Febr. 1900 in Morristown (New Jersey), begleitete 1878–80 Schwatka (s.d.) nach King Willsamland, beteiligte sich 1881 an der Hilfsexpedition zur Aufsuchung der verschollenen Jeannette und zog, als das Schiff Rodgers in der Beringstraße verbrannte, über Land zur Lena, wo er bei der Rettung der Überlebenden von der Jeannette-Expedition mitwirkte. Während des französisch-anamitischen Krieges 1883 war G. als Korrespondent des New Yorker »Herald« in Tongking. Er veröffentlichte: »Schwatka's search sledging in the Arctic in quest of the Franklin records« (New York 1881); »Ice pack and Tundra. An account of the search of the Jeannette and a sledge journey through Siberia« (das. 1883).
