Frottola, in der ältesten ital. Literatur (14.- 16. Jahrh.) Name einer volkstümlichen Dichtungsform (beliebig lange Gruppen von gleichreimigen Versen durch je einen Kurzvers verkettet) didaktischer oder satirischer Art, ein Sprichwortgedicht in Knittelversen, auch motto confetto genannt. Im 15. und 16. Jahrh. verstand man unter F. (oder Barzelletta) vorwiegend eine Art von Tanzgedicht (Ballata), fast nur in achtsilbigen Versen mit einigen Abweichungen von dem Bau der Ballaten. – In der norditalischen mehrstimmigen Liedkomposition des 14.- 15. Jahrh. ist F. Name der schmucklosen Gesänge, die wie die neapolitanischen Villanellen und Villoten in naturalistischer Weise die Melodie der Oberstimme harmonisch begleiten mit häufigen Verstößen gegen die Kunstregeln.
