Edkins, Joseph, engl. Missionar und Sinolog, geb. 19. Dez. 1823 in Nailsworth, wirkte 1848–80 im Dienste der Londoner Missionsgesellschaft in China, namentlich in Schanghai, Tiëntsin und Peking, und beteiligte sich an der Übersetzung des Neuen Testaments ins Chinesische (1870). Er veröffentlichte außer Grammatiken des Mandarin- und Schanghaidialekts des Chinesischen (1853, 1857): »Religion in China« (3. Aufl., Lond. 1884); »Chinese Buddhism« (1880); »The evolution of the Chinese language« (1888); »Evolution of the Hebrew language« (1889) u.a. 1880–85 stand er im Dienste der chines. Regierung.
