Davenport

Davenport (spr. däwwenpōrt), Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Scott im nordamerikan. Staat Iowa, am Mississippi, der hier Stromschnellen bildet, durch eine Brücke mit der gegenüberliegenden Stadt Rock Island (s.d.) in Illinois verbunden, hat eine naturwissenschaftliche Akademie, höhere Schulen, bedeutende Industrie (1900: 418 Betriebe, 4348 Arbeiter und 11,573,670 Doll. Produktionswert) in Maschinen, Ackergeräten, Biskuits etc., umfangreichen Getreidehandel und zählt (1900) 35,254 Einw. Das steuerpflichtige Eigentum betrug 1900: 15,6 Mill., die städtische Schuld 275,000 Doll.
