Copeland

Copeland (spr. kōp-länd), Ralph, Astronom, geb. 3. Sept. 1837 in Woodplumpton (Lancashire), studierte in Göttingen, war daselbst Assistent an der Sternwarte, nahm 1869–70 an der zweiten deutschen Nordpolexpedition teil, wurde 1870 Assistent an der Sternwarte des Lords Rosse zu Parsonstown in Irland und 1874 an der Sternwarte in Dublin. 1876 wurde er als Astronom an Lord Linsays Privatsternwarte in Dun Echt und 1888 als königlicher Astronom für Schottland und Direktor der neuerbauten Sternwarte nach Edinburg berufen. Er veröffentlichte: »Mittlere Örter der Sterne in den Zonen -0° und -1° der Bonner Durchmusterung« (Götting. 1869, gemeinsam mit Börgen).
