Agau, Volksstamm in Abessinien, zur äthiopischen Familie der Hamiten gehörig, die Ureinwohner des abessinischen Alpenlandes, die noch heute den Grundstock der ganzen dortigen Bevölkerung bilden, unverfälscht aber nur in der Provinz Agaumeder und in der eigentlichen Provinz A. wohnen; doch wird überall, wo unter der kultivierten Bevölkerung Tigré und Amhara herrschen, A. oder Hamtönga (Hamra) gesprochen.
