Yggdrasill

Yggdrasill (Yggdrasils Askr), in der nord. Mythologie die riesenhafte Esche (Weltesche), unter deren Bild man sich das ganze Weltgebäude vorstellte. Drei Wurzeln halten den Baum aufrecht, deren eine zu den Menschen, die andre zu den Hrimthursen (Riesen) reicht, die dritte aber über Niflheim (Unterwelt) steht, während ihre Zweige sich über die ganze Welt breiten und über den Himmel wölben. Unter ihr halten die Götter Gericht, dort weilen die Nornen (s. d.). über die Deutung des Namens vgl. besonders Eirikr Magnusson, Odin's horse, Y. (Lond. 1895).
