Xylose (Holzzucker) C5H10O5., oder C4H5(OH)4CHO entsteht aus Holzgummi (s. d.) und aus Maiskolben beim Kochen mit verdünnter Schwefelsäure, polarisiert nach rechts, gibt bei Reduktion inaktiven Xylit C5H7(OH)5 und bei Oxydation Xylonsäure und inaktive Trioxyglutarsäure.
