Vesoul (spr. w'sūl), Hauptstadt des franz. Depart. Obersaône, 235 m ü. M., am Durgeon (Zufluß der Saône), Knotenpunkt der Lyoner und der Ostbahn, hat eine schöne Kirche aus dem 18. Jahrh., ein Denkmal der 1870/71 bei Belfort gefallenen Mobilgarden des Departements, Weinbau, Fabrikation von Feilen, Werkzeugen, Möbeln, Teigwaren etc., Handel und (1906) 10,057 (als Gemeinde 10,163) Einw. V. ist Sitz des Präfekten, eines Gerichtshofs, einer Ackerbaukammer, einer Filiale der Bank von Frankreich und hat ein Lyzeum, eine Lehrer- und Lehrerinnenbildungsanstalt, eine Bibliothek (26,000 Bände), ein Museum und ein Theater.
