Troy

Troy (spr. treu, »Troja«), Name vieler Städte in der nordamerikan. Union, namentlich: 1) Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Rensselaer in New York, links am Hudson, am Endpunkte der Dampfschiffahrt, an der Vereinigung des Mohawk, Hudson, Champlain- und Eriekanals, Bahnzentrum, auf einer von Hügeln beherrschten Alluvialebene, mit schönem Stadthaus, Musikhalle, Athenäum, Polytechnischer Schule, kath. Priesterseminar, Irrenanstalt, Waisenhäusern und (1900) 60,651 Einw., darunter 1796 in Deutschland Geborne. Die bedeutende Industrie erzeugte 1905 in 311 Betrieben mit 19,114 Arbeitern für 31,860,829 Doll. Waren, besonders Kragen und Manschetten (für 11,271,708 Doll.), Hemden (4,263,610 Doll.), Strumpfwaren, Bier, Maschinen, Öfen, Besen etc. Gegenüber liegt West-Troy (s. d.). T. wurde 1752 von den Holländern gegründet. – 2) Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Miami in Ohio, am Großen Miami und dessen Seitenkanal, mit schönem Gerichtshof, Maschinen- und Wagenbau, Tabakhandel und (1900) 5881 Einw.
