entsteht bei Behandlung von Paraphenylendiamin C6H4(NH2)2 in saurer schwefelwasserstoffhaltiger Lösung mit Eisenchlorid und ist der Typus einer Reihe blauer Farbstoffe (Lauthsche Farbstoffe), die sich vom Thiodiphenylamin (Thiazin) C12H9NS oder 
ableiten. Dies entsteht beim Erhitzen von Diphenylamin mit Schwefel, bildet gelbliche Kristalle, schmilzt bei 180° und ist destillierbar. Durch Eintreten von Amidogruppen in diese Verbindung entstehen farblose Leukobasen, die durch Oxydation in Farbstoffe übergehen. Die Leukobase von Lauths Violett ist Diamidothiodiphenylamin C12H11N3S. T. ist ein dunkelgrünes, metallisch schimmerndes Pulver, löslich in Wasser, färbt Wolle und Seide violett. Wertvoller ist das ebenfalls hierher gehörige Methylenblau (salzsaures Tetramethylthionin), s. Methylenblau.
