Tenōr

Tenōr (ital. Tenore, franz. Taille), die hohe Männerstimme, die sich jedoch von der tiefern (dem Baß) nicht wie der Sopran vom Alt durch das Überwiegen eines hohen Registers über ein tiefes unterscheidet; die sogen. Kopfstimme kommt bei Männerstimmen nur ausnahmsweise und als Surrogat zur Verwendung, die eigentlichen vollen Töne des Männergesangs vom tiefsten Baß bis zum höchsten T. werden durch dieselbe Funktion der Stimmbänder erzeugt wie die sogen. Brusttöne der Frauenstimmen (vgl. Register). Man unterscheidet zwei Hauptgattungen von Tenorstimmen, sogen. lyrische mit hellem Timbre und Heldentenöre mit dunkler Färbung. Der Heldentenor entspricht etwa dem Mezzosopran, d. h. er hat nur einen mäßigen Umfang (von klein c-b') und zeichnet sich durch eine kräftige Mittellage aus; der lyrische T. hat in der Regel eine kraftlosere Tiefe, dafür aber nach der Höhe einen ausgiebigern Umfang (c'', cis''). – T. heißt auch der Part in Vokal- und Instrumentalkompositionen, der für die Tenorstimme bestimmt ist, resp. ihr der Höhenlage nach entspricht; auch Instrumente, die diesen Umfang haben, heißen Tenorinstrumente, so die Tenorposaune, das Tenorhorn (in England heißt im Quartett die Bratsche T.) etc. – Der Name T. (eigentlich soviel wie fortlaufender Faden) wurde zuerst im 12. Jahrh., als der Diskantus aufkam, der dem Gregorianischen Gesang entnommenen Hauptmelodie beigelegt, gegen die eine höhere (der Diskant) diskantierte (abweichend sang). Später gesellte sich als dritter der Kontratenor, aus dem sich durch Spaltung in Contratenor altus (Kontraalt, Haute contra) u. Contratenor bassus (Basse contra) der Alt und Baß (s. d.) entwickelte.
