Stirlingshire

Stirlingshire (spr. ßtörlingschīr), Grafschaft im südlichen Schottland, westlich vom Forthbusen der Nordsee, grenzt im N. an die Grafschaften Clackmannan und Perth, im W. und Süden an Dumbarton, Lanark und Linlithgow, umfaßt 1159 qkm (21,05 QM.) mit (1901) 142,338 Einw. (123 auf 1 qkm). – Geschichtlich merkwürdig ist S. als der Schauplatz heftiger Kämpfe der Römer mit den Kaledoniern, gegen die jene den berühmten Pikten- oder Hadrianswall (s. d.) zwischen dem Forthbusen und dem Clydebusen errichteten.
