Salford

Salford (spr. ßaolförd), Schwesterstadt von Manchester (s. d., S. 203) und Grafschaft im nordwestlichen England, auf drei Seiten vom Irwell umflossen, Sitz eines römisch-kath. Bischofs, hat eine vom ältern Pugin im gotischen Stil erbaute kath. Kathedrale, ein Rathaus im dorischen Stil, Denkmäler der Königin Viktoria und von Sir Robert Peel, eine Freibibliothek mit Museum, 4 Parke (darunter den Peel Park), ein von Howard (s. d. 2) gegründetes Zellengefängnis (New Bailey), zahlreiche Fabriken, bedeutenden Viehhandel, große Schlachthäuser und (1901) 220,957 Einw. S. gehörte bis 1888 zu Lancashire.
