Rae, John

Rae, John (spr. rē), engl. Polarreisender, geb. 1813 auf den Orkneyinseln, gest. 22. Juli 1893 in Addison Gardens (Schottland), studierte in Edinburg Medizin, wurde Beamter der Hudsonbaikompanie, machte in deren Auftrag 1846–47 vom Fort Churchill an der Hudsonbai eine Forschungsreise an die Nordküste Amerikas, entdeckte dabei den nach ihm benannten Isthmus zwischen Repulsebai und Boothiagolf, begleitete 1848 die Franklin-Expedition Richardsons (s. d. 2) zum Mackenzie und Kupferminenfluß und ging 1849 über die Dolphinstraße nach Wollastonland, nahm 1853–54 von der Repulsebai aus die Westküste der Boothiahalbinsel auf und erlangte hier durch Eskimos die ersten Nachrichten von dem Schicksal der Franklin-Expedition und einige Reliquien derselben. Seine anfangs bezweifelten Angaben wurden später bestätigt, und R. erhielt die für die Aufklärung des Geschicks der Franklinschen Expedition ausgesetzten 10,000 Pfd. Sterl. Er veröffentlichte: »Narrative of an expedition to the shores of the Arctic Sea« (Lond. 1850).
