Baliol

Baliol, John de, König von Schottland, geb. um 1250, gest. 1315, bewarb sich nach dem Tode der Margarete, Enkelin Alexanders III., 1290 mit Robert Bruce (s. d.) und elf andern Prätendenten um den schottischen Thron. König Eduard I. von ng land, der die Oberherrlichkeit über Schottland beanspruchte, setzte als Schiedsrichter 1292 B. zum Lehnskönig von Schottland ein. Als dieser sich 1294 empörte, wurde er von Eduard gezwungen, 10. Juli 1296 auf die Krone zu verzichten. 1299 aus der Gefangenschaft entlassen, lebte er bis zu seinem Tod in Frankreich. – Sein ältester Sohn, Eduard, gewann mit Hilfe Eduards III. von England 1332 den schottischen Thron, ward aber bald vertrieben, mur von Eduard nach dem Sieg bei Berwick 1333 wieder eingesetzt, verzichtete er jedoch 1356 und starb 1363 ale der Letzte seines Stammes.
