Orchardson

Orchardson, William Quiller, engl. Maler, geb. 1835 in Edinburg, wurde mit 15 Jahren Schüler der dortigen Akademie und fand schon mit seinen ersten Bldern solchen Beifall, daß er sich 1863 entschloß, nach London überzusiedeln, wo er seitdem eine große Zahl von Genre- und Geschichtsbildern und Bildnissen gemalt hat. Von erstern sind die hervorragendsten: ein altes englisches Lied (1863), Blumen des Waldes (1864), die Herausforderung (1865), Hamlet und Ophelia, Tal bot und die Gräfin von Auvergne, Heinrich IV. und Falstaff (1868), auf dem Canale Grande in Venedig (1871), Mondschein auf den Lagunen, Hamlet und der König, Jessica, Napoleon I. an Bord des Bellerophon 1815 (1880, Tate-Museum in London), Haushaltung während der Flitterwochen (1882), Voltaire als Gast beim Herzog von Sully (1883, Kunsthalle in Hamburg), der Salon der Madame Récamier (1885), der Toast auf den jungen Herzog (1889). Von seinen Bildnisschöpfungen ist besonders das Gruppenbild der königlichen Familie in Schloß Windsor 1899 zu nennen. Seit 1877 ist O. Mitglied der königlichen Akademie.
