Nyir

Nyir (magyar. Nyirség, spr. njīr-schēg), großes, kahles Sandgebiet im ungar. Komitat Szabolcs, umfaßt 4800 qkm und erstreckt sich östlich bis an den Krasznafluß im Komitat Szatmár. Das Gebiet enthält außer zahlreichen schilfbewachsenen Sümpfen auch vier Natronteiche, deren größter der Natronsee Sóstó (spr. schōschtō) bei Nyiregyháza ist. Im Nyirgebiet, dessen Bevölkerung neben der Salpeterproduktion auch Korbflechterei betreibt, gedeihen Korn, Mais, Tabak, ausgezeichnete Melonen und Kartoffeln, stellenweise auch Wein und Obst. Die N. wird so nach den einst hier vorhandenen Birkenwaldungen (nyir, Birke) benannt. Hauptort ist Nyiregyháza (s. d.).
