Autran

Autran (spr. otráng), Joseph, franz. Dichter und Schriftsteller. geb. 20. Juni 1813 in Marseille als Sohn eines Kaufmanns, gelangte 1852 durch Erbschaft in den Besitz eines großen Vermögens, wurde 1868 Mitglied der französischen Akademie und starb 6. März 1877 in seiner Vaterstadt. Seine Hauptwerke sind: die Gedichtsammlung »La Mer« (1835), die, bedeutend erweitert, 1852 unter dem Titel. »Les poëmes de la Mer« erschien; die Tragödie »La fille d'Eschyle« (1848), die glänzenden Erfolg hatte und ihm zu gleichem Teil mit Augier (für dessen »Gabrielle«) den großen Preis der Akademie eintrug; ferner das epische Gedicht »Milianah« (1842). Autrans Dichtungen sind wohlgefeilt und von einem hellenisch-klassischen Anflug, haben aber keine tiefern Spuren in dem geistigen Leben seiner Nation zurückgelassen. Sie erschienen gesammelt in 8 Bänden (Par. 1874–81).
