Novocaīn, das Monochlorhydrat des Paraaminobenzoyldiäthylaminoäthanols, farblose Kristalle, leicht löslich in kaltem Wasser, schwerer in kaltem Alkohol, schmilzt bei 156°, besitzt dieselbe Wirkung auf periphere sensible Nerven wie Kokain, ist aber sehr viel weniger giftig, übt bei lokaler Anwendung gar keinen Reiz aus und zeigt keine üble Nebenwirkung. Man benutzt es daher als lokales Anästhetikum.
