Nikolaistad

Nikolaistad (Wasa), Hauptstadt des finn. Gouv. Wasa, am Bottnischen Meerbusen und an der Eisenbahn Tammerfors-N., hat eine orthodoxe Kirche, eine luth. Kirche in gotischem Stil (seit 1862), mehrere stattliche Neubauten (Hofgericht, Stadthaus etc.), 2 Lyzeen, 3 Mädchengymnasien, eine Navigationsschule, einen Hafen, Schiffswerft (auf der Insel Brändö), ansehnlichen Ausfuhrhandel und (1903) 17,239 Einw. N. ist Sitz eines deutschen Konsuls. – Als die 1606 vom schwedischen König Karl IX. gegründete Stadt Wasa, die bis 1611 Mustafaari hieß, 1852 niederbrannte, wurde 6 km davon entfernt, am Meer, eine neue Stadt angelegt, die seit 1855 zu Ehren Nikolaus' I. offiziell N. genannt wird, im Volksmund aber den alten Namen bewahrt hat.
