Martène (spr. -tǟn'), Edmond, gelehrter Benediktiner, geb. 22. Dez. 1654 in St. – Jean-de-Lone bei Dijon, gest. 20. Juni 1739 im Kloster St.-Germain des-Prés zu Paris, trat mit 18 Jahren in die Kongregation der Mauriner und durchforschte 1708–24 mit seinem Ordensgenossen Ursin Durand die Bibliotheken vieler Klöster und Kirchen in Deutschland, Frankreich und den Niederlanden, um Dokumente für die »Gallia christiana«, an deren Ausgabe die Mauriner arbeiteten, ausfindig zu machen. Aus seinen zahlreichen Werken sind hervorzuheben: »Commentarius in regulam sancti patris Benedicti« (Par. 1690, 2. Aufl. 1695); »De antiquis monachorum ritibus« (Lyon 1690, 2 Bde.); »De antiquis ecclesiae ritibus« (Rouen 1700–02; 2. Ausg., Antwerp. 1736 bis 1738, 4 Bde.); »Thesaurus novus anecdotorum« (Par. 1717, 5 Bde.) und die Sammlung »Veterum scriptorum et monumentorum historicorum, dogmaticorum et moralium amplissima collectio« (das. 1724–33, 9 Bde.).
