Mājor

Mājor (eigentlich Meier), Georg, luther. Theolog, geb. 1502 in Nürnberg, gest. 28. Nov. 1574 in Wittenberg, war Schüler Luthers und Melanchthons in Wittenberg, ging 1529 als Rektor an die Schule zu Magdeburg, wurde 1535 Pfarrer in Eisleben und 1536 Professor der Theologie und Prediger in Wittenberg, als welcher er an dem zweiten Regensburger Religionsgespräch 1546 und an den Verhandlungen über das Leipziger Interim 1548 teilnahm. Aus dieser Tätigkeit entwickelte sich seine Kontroverse (Majoristischer Streit) mit Nikolaus Amsdorf über das Verhältnis des Glaubens zu den guten Werken, deren Notwendigkeit zur Seligkeit M., hierin zunächst von Menius unterstützt, behauptete, während Amsdorf (s. d.) die guten Werke als schädlich zur Seligkeit hinstellte und an Flacius (s. d.) und Strigel Kampfgenossen fand. M., der 1550 Superintendent in Eisleben geworden, aber schon im folgenden Jahr zu seiner Tätigkeit in Wittenberg zurückgekehrt war, nahm, um Mißdeutungen zu verhüten, 1562 seinen Ausdruck zurück. Die lutherische Konkordienformel verwarf beide Meinungen. Seine gesammelten Werke veröffentlichte M. teilweise selbst in Wittenberg 1569.
