Lyall (spr. lai-ĕl), 1) Sir Alfred Comyn, engl. Staatsmann und Schriftsteller, geb. 4. Jan. 1835 zu Coulston in Surrey, trat 1855 in den indischen Staatsdienst und ward 1882 Statthalter der nordwestlichen Provinzen. 1888 aus Indien heimgekehrt, wurde er Mitglied des dem Staatssekretär für Indien beigeordneten Rates. Er schrieb: »Asiatic studies, religious and social« (1882, 2. Aufl. 1884; franz. Übersetzung, Par. 1885); »Life of Warren Hastings« (1889); »Natural religion in India« (1891); »Rise and expansion of the British dominion in India« (1893, 2. Aufl. 1894); »Asiatic studies, religious and social« (1882; neue Ausg. 1899, 2 Bde.); »Tennyson« (in dem Sammelwerk »English man of letters«, 1902); »Life of the marquis of Düfferin and Ava« (1905, 2 Bde.). In seinen »Verses written in India« (1889, 4. Aufl. 1896) entwarf L. ergreifende Bilder aus dem Leben der Eingebornen wie der herrschenden Europäer.
