Ashmole

Ashmole (spr. äschmōl), Elias, engl. Altertumsforscher und Heraldiker, geb. 23. Mai 1617 zu Litchfield in Staffordshire, gest. 18. Mai 1692 in Windsor, praktizierte zuerst als Advokat, ließ sich 1649 in London nieder, erhielt nach Karls II. Thronbesteigung die Stelle eines königlichen Heraldikers zu Windsor und wurde später Mitglied der Royal Society. Berühmt sind sein »Theatrum chymicum britannicum« (1652) und seine »Geschichte des Hosenbandordens«. Seine reiche Sammlung von antiquarischen, numismatischen und literarischen Schätzen ward 1679 größtenteils ein Raub der Flammen. Den Rest vermachte A. der Universität Oxford, wo sie im Ashmolean Museum aufgestellt ist.
