Jevons

Jevons (spr. dschīwens), William Stanley, engl. Philosoph und Nationalökonom, geb. 1. Sept. 1835 in Liverpool, gest. 13. Aug. 1882, ein Enkel des berühmten Historikers Roscoe, war 1854–58 Wardein der australischen Münze in Sydney, studierte dann weiter in London, ward 1864 Fellow an der Universität daselbst, 1866 Professor am Owen's College in Manchester, welche Stelle er Anfang 1881 niederlegte. Er ertrank beim Baden im Meer zu Bexhill bei Hastings. Seine Hauptwerke sind: »The coal question« (1865, 2. Aufl. 1866); »Substitution of similars the true principle of reasoning« (1869); »Theory of political economy« (1871, 3. Aufl. 1888), worin er nationalökonomische Lehrsätze in mathematischer Form entwickelt; »The principles of science: a treatise on logic and scientific method« (1874, 2 Bde.; 2. Aufl. 1877); »Elementary lessons in logic« (1870, 7. Aufl. 1879); »Money and the mechanism of exchange« (1875, 8. Aufl. 1887; deutsch, Leipz. 1876); »Primer of political economy« (1878); »Studies in deductive logic« (1880, 2. Aufl. 1884); »The State in relation to labour« (1882, 3. Aufl. 1894). Nach seinem Tode wurden noch veröffentlicht: »Methods ot social reform, and other papers« (1883, 2. Aufl. 1904); »Investigations in currency and finance« (1884); »Letters and journals« (hrsg. von seiner Witwe, 1886); »Pure logic« (zuerst 1863 erschienen) »and other minor works« (hrsg. von Adamson, 1890).
