Illinois (spr. illinói [3silbig]), Hauptstrom des nach ihm benannten nordamerikan. Staates, entsteht bei Dresden, 70 km südwestlich von Chicago, durch die Vereinigung des Kankakee, aus Indiana, und des Desplaines, aus Wisconsin kommend, nimmt rechts Fox, Spoon und Crooked Creek, links Vermillon, Mackinaw u. Sangamon auf und mündet nach 410 km langem Laufe, 45 km oberhalb St. Louis, in den Mississippi. Der I. dehnt sich mehrfach seenartig aus, besonders im Peoriasee, hat schlimme Hochwasser und Eisgänge, ist im Unterlauf kanalisiert und auf 2,1 m vertieft und für Dampfer bis Lasalle (330 km) schiffbar, von wo aus der Illinois-Michigan-Kanal (s. d.) nach Chicago führt.
