Hannay

Hannay (spr. hännĭ), James, engl. Schriftsteller, geb. 1827 in Dumfries, gest. 9. Jan. 1873 in Barcelona, trat mit 13 Jahren in die Marine, nahm aber 1845 seinen Abschied, um sich der Literatur zu widmen, und gab 1860–64 den »Edinburgh Courant« heraus. 1868 ward er zum englischen Konsul in Barcelona ernannt. Außer Beiträgen zu Zeitschriften, besonders zur »Quarterly Review« (gesammelt erschienen 1861) und zum »Punch«, veröffentlichte er Skizzen: »Biscuits and grog« (1848); »Hearts are trumps« (1849); »King Dobbs, sketches in ultramarine« (1849); »Satire and satirists« (1854) und Romane: »Singleton Fontenoy« (1850); »Eustace Conyers« (1855; deutsch, Leipz. 1856); ferner »A memoir of the late Mr. Thackeray« (1864), dem später die »Studies on Thackeray« (1869) folgten.
