Angkor

Angkor (Ongkor), Hauptort der gleichnamigen Provinz von Siam, an einem 14 km unterhalb in den großen See Tonlésap mündenden Fluß, Sitz des Gouverneurs. Unweit südlich die berühmten Ruinen A.-Vat (Nakhon-Vat), ein Tempelkloster von 3,5 km Umfang mit gewaltigem Dom der untergegangenen großen Stadt Nakhon-Tom, deren von einer 10 m hohen, 13,6 km langen Mauer umgebene Ruinen mit 5 phantastischen Toren vielleicht aus dem 14. Jahrh. stammen. Der Tempel war das Nationalheiligtum für Kambodscha und starkbesuchter buddhistischer Wallfahrtsort. Vgl. Delaporte, Voyage an Cambodge.
