Grinnell. Henry, Förderer von Nordpolexpeditionen, geb. 1800 in New Bedford (Massachusetts), gest. 30. Juni 1874 in New York, siedelte 1818 nach New York über, gelangte als Reeder zu großem Reichtum und unterstützte freigebigst arktische Forschungen. So entsandte er auf eigne Kosten 1850 zur Aufsuchung Franklins die Expedition von de Haven, die Grinnell-Land entdeckte, und trug zum großen Teil die Kosten der Kaneschen Polarreise von 1853–55 sowie der spätern amerikanischen Expeditionen unter Hayes und Hall. 1852–53 war G. Präsident und 1854–72 Vizepräsident der amerikanischen Geographischen Gesellschaft.
