Aelfric (spr. ǟl-), Name von vier angelsächs. Kirchenmännern, deren Persönlichkeiten und Werke häufig verwechselt werden: 1) Abt von Malmesbury, am Ende des 10. Jahrh., dem ein nicht mehr vorhandenes Werk: »De naturis rerum«, beigelegt wird. – 2) A. von Canterbury, ein prachtliebender, kriegerischer Herr aus einer edlen Familie Kents, Bischof in Wilton und 995 Erzbischof von Canterbury, was er bis zu seinem Tode (16. Nov. 1006) blieb. – 3) Erzbischof von York, 1023–51, mit dem Beinamen Putta. – 4) A., der Mönch und Schriftsteller in der nationalen Sprache, s. Angelsächsische Sprache und Literatur.
