Wingate

Wingate (spr. ŭinngēt), Sir Francis Reginald, Serdar von Ägypten, geb. 1861, besuchte die Militärschule in Woolwich, trat 1880 in die englische Artillerie ein, diente in Indien und Aden und wurde 1889 zum Direktor des Nachrichtenbureaus, dann zum Generaladjutanten der ägyptischen Armee ernannt. Er griff 24. Nov. 1899 das Heer des Kalifen bei Om Debrikat an und vernichtete es im ersten Anlauf; der Kalif wurde getötet. W. wurde darauf als Nachfolger Lord Kitcheners zum Serdar von Ägypten und Generalgouverneur des Sudân ernannt. Er schrieb: »Mahdism and the Egyptian Sudan« (Lond. 1891) und übersetzte die Werke des Missionars Ohrwälder (14. Aufl. 1903) und des Obersten Slatin Pascha (1896) über ihre Gefangenschaft beim Mahdi ins Englische.
