Whitehall

Whitehall (spr. ŭait-haol), 1) Stadt im nordamerikan. Staate New York, Grafschaft Washington, am obern Ende des Champlainsees, mit Sägemühlen, Tischlereien, Schiffswerften, lebhaftem Verkehr und (1900) 5295 Einw. – 2) Name einer breiten Straße in London, zwischen Westminster und Trafalgar Square, nach einem alten königlichen Palast (»weiße Halle«) benannt, der 1691 und 1697 abbrannte. Von dem durch Inigo Jones (1619–22) projektierten und noch erhaltenen Neubau ist nur die große Halle (mit Deckengemälden von Rubens) vollendet, diente später als Kapelle und wurde 1894 mit dem anstoßenden Neubau des Royal United Service Institute (Modelle von Schlachten, Kriegsschiffen, Waffen etc. enthaltend) verschmolzen. An W. knüpfen sich viele historische Erinnerungen aus der Zeit der Tudors und Stuarts. Vgl. Loftie, W., historical and architectural notes (Lond. 1905).
