West, 1) Benjamin, engl. Maler, geb. 10. Okt. 1738 zu Springfield in Pennsylvanien, gest. 11. März 1820 in London, ging 1760 nach Rom, 1763 nach England und half hier 1768 die königliche Kunstakademie gründen, deren Präsident er 1792 als Nachfolger von Reynolds wurde. Bedeutender als seine akademisch-kühlen Werke mit religiösen und antiken Vorwürfen, wie die Altarbilder und Fenstergemälde in der Hofkapelle zu Windsor, der Tod des Epaminondas (Galerie in Hamptoncourt), Orestes und Pylades vor Iphigenia, Agrippina mit der Asche des Germanicus u. a., sind seine Bilder aus der Zeitgeschichte, darunter der Tod des Generals James Wolfe (Grosvenor-Galerie in London), W. Penn, mit den Indianern unterhandelnd; der Tod des Admirals Nelson; ferner die Schlacht von La Hougue (1692) und die Schlacht am Boynefluß (1690). Vgl. Galt, Life and studies of Benj. W.
