Volta (Rio V., Amu), Fluß in der brit. Kolonie Goldküste (Westafrika), entsteht aus dem Schwarzen (mit Rotem V.) und Weißen V. Beide entspringen in Französisch-Westafrika, der erste, der bedeutendere, in Kenadugu, der dritte nahe der Stadt Wagudugu. Westlich der Handelsstadt Salaga vereinigt, bildet der Fluß die Grenze gegen die deutsche Kolonie Togo, nimmt südlich von Kete Kratschi den Oti aus Togo auf, tritt in seinem Unterlauf ganz auf englisches Gebiet und mündet zwischen Lagunen bei Ad (d)a über eine große Barre mit furchtbarer Brandung (Kalema) in die Bai von Benin. Schiffbar für Barken wird der V. bei Kete Kratschi 40 km, bei Hochwasser bis Jegge, dem Hafen von Salaga. Beim Durchbruch durch das Akuapem- und Apossogebirge bei Akuami gefährden Stromschnellen die Schiffahrt; nur zur Regenzeit können Seeschiffe von 6 m Tiefgang die Barre passieren und Schiffe von 2 m Tiefgang bis zum Knie bei Kpong (92 km) gelangen.
