Strathnairn

Strathnairn (spr. ßtrăthnḗrn), Hugh Henry Rose, Lord, engl. General, geb. 1803 in Berlin, wo sein Vater britischer Gesandter war, gest. 16. Okt. 1885 in Paris, trat 1820 in die Armee und ward, nachdem er bis zum Oberstleutnant ausgerückt war, nacheinander Generalkonsul in Syrien, Gesandtschaftssekretär in Konstantinopel und britischer Kommissar im französischen Hauptquartier während des Krimkrieges. Beim Ausbruch des indischen Aufstandes erhielt er als Generalmajor ein selbständiges Kommando und zeichnete sich so aus, daß er bei der Rückkehr Lord Clydes nach Europa diesem im Generalkommando der britischen Truppen in Indien folgte, in welcher Stellung er sich große Verdienste um die Reorganisation der indischen Armee erwarb. Von 1865–70 kommandierte er die britischen Truppen in Irland, 1866 wurde er zum Baron S. und zum Peer erhoben und 1877 zum Feldmarschall ernannt.
