Simar, Hubert Theophil, Erzbischof von Köln, geb. 14. Dez. 1835 in Eupen, gest. 24. Mai 1902 in Köln, studierte in Bonn katholische Theologie, wurde 1859 Priester, 1860 Privatdozent an der theologischen Fakultät zu Bonn, 1864 außerordentlicher, 1880 ordentlicher Professor der Dogmatik daselbst, 1891 Bischof von Paderborn, 1899 Erzbischof von Köln. Er schrieb: »Die Theologie des heiligen Paulus« (Freib. i. Br. 1864, 2. Aufl. 1883); »Lehrbuch der Moraltheologie« (das. 1867, 3. Aufl. 1893); »Das Gewissen und die Gewissensfreiheit«, Vorträge (das. 1874, 2. Aufl. 1902); »Lehrbuch der Dogmatik« (das. 1880, 4. Aufl. 1899); »Die Lehre vom Wesen des Gewissens in der Scholastik des 13. Jahrhunderts« (1. Teil: »Die Franziskanerschule«, das. 1885). S. war 1876 an der Gründung der Görres-Gesellschaft (s. Görres 1) beteiligt und schrieb eine ihrer ersten Vereinsschriften: »Der Aberglaube« (3. Aufl., Köln 1894).
