Scranton, Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Lackawanna des nordamerikan. Staates Pennsylvanien, am Zusammenfluß des Roaring Brook mit dem Lackawanna, Bahnknotenpunkt, hat eine kath. Kathedrale, Musikakademie, Bibliothek (50,000 Bde.), Handelskammer, Museum, Theater und (1900) 102,026 Einw., darunter 4704 in Deutschland Geborne. Die Industrie, gefördert durch die ausgedehnten Anthrazitkohlenlager in der Nachbarschaft (jährliche Produktion 15 Mill. Ton.), erzeugte 1900 Waren im Werte von 27,646,418 Doll., darunter fünf große Eisen- und Stahlwerke (10,231,139 Doll.), ferner Seidenfabriken (2,065,200 Doll.), Maschinenwerkstätten, Brauereien etc.
