Schofield (spr. -fīld), John Mac Allister, amerikan. General, geb. 29. Sept. 1831 in Berry (New York), gest. 5. März 1906 in New York, ward in West Point ausgebildet, 1855 Lehrer der Naturphilosophie an der Militärakademie, 1861 Kapitän und nach Ausbruch des Bürgerkriegs Major bei den Freiwilligen von Missouri. Er diente als Brigadegeneral in Missouri bis 1864, dann in Ohio und machte Shermans Zug nach Atlanta mit. Von hier ward er nach Tennessee geschickt, um General Thomas gegen Hood zu verstärken. Für den Sieg bei Franklin (30. Nov. 1864) ward er zum Generalmajor der regulären Armee befördert. Anfang 1865 ward er nach Nordcarolina geschickt und nahm 22. Febr. Wilmington. Er schloß die Kapitulation mit Johnston 26. April ab, ward darauf nach Paris geschickt und war 1868–69 Kriegsminister. Als Nachfolger Sheridans war er 1888 bis 1895 kommandierender General der Unionsarmee. Er schrieb: »Forty six years in the army« (New York 1897).
