Bassein, Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Distrikts (18,251 qkm mit [1891] 339,842 Einw., zum aller größten Teil Buddhisten) und wichtiger Hafen (1900. 37 Schiffe mit 167,263 Ton.) in der Division Irawadi der britisch-ind. Provinz Niederbirma, unter 16°46´ nördl. Br. und 94°48´ östl. L. am gleichnamigen Mündungsarm des Irawadi, den ein Fort am linken Ufer beherrscht, mit (1891) 28,147 Einw., Sitz eines deutschen Konsuls, hat viele Pagoden, Klöster, Hospitäler und große Reismühlen. Die Hauptausfuhr besteht in Reis (1900: 167,263 Ton. nach Europa), die Einfuhr in Kohle und Salz (aus Deutschland), meist über Rangun, mit dem B. durch Dampfer und Telegraphen eng verbunden ist. Die Ausfuhr beträgt über 1 Mill. Pfd. Sterl. jährlich. – B., 1852 von den Briten erobert, soll bereits 1249 v. Chr. gegründet und schon damals ein wichtiger Hafen gewesen sein.
