Ripley (spr. ripplī), George, amerikan. Schriftsteller, geb. 3. Okt. 1802 in Greenfield (Massachusetts), gest. 4. Juli 1880 in New York, war Unitarierprediger in Boston, nahm Anteil an den Bestrebungen der Transzendentalisten und gründete die kommunistische Kolonie Brook Farm. Nachdem er bei diesem Unternehmen sein Vermögen eingebüßt, wurde er 1849 literarischer Redakteur der »New York Tribune« und übte einen großen Einfluß auf seine Leser aus. Mit Charles A. Dana gab er die »American Cyclopedia« (New York 1857–63, 2. Aufl. 1873–76) heraus, mit Bayard Taylor ein »Handbook of literature and the fine arts« (das. 1852) und redigierte außerdem »Specimens of foreign literature« (Boston 1838–1842, 14 Bde.). Sein bedeutendstes Werk ist »Discourses on the philosophy of religion« (1839). Vgl. O. B. Frothingham, George R. (Boston 1882).
