Red River of the North

Red River of the North (spr. redd riwwer ŏw thë north, »Roter Fluß des Nordens«), Fluß in Nordamerika, kommt aus dem Elbowsee in Minnesota, fließt südlich durch mehrere kleine Seen und den Ottertailsee, vereinigt sich bei Breckenridge mit dem aus dem Lake Traverse kommenden Sioux Wood River, trennt dann Minnesota von Dakota, tritt bei Pembina in die kanadische Provinz Manitoba und mündet, 1200 km lang, in das Südende des Winnipegsees. Er nimmt rechts den Red Lake River, Buffalo, Sand Hill und Snake Hill, links Cheyenne, Goose, Pembina und bei Winnipeg den schiffbaren Assiniboine auf. Der schmale und tiefe Fluß wird während acht Monaten von Dampfern bis Fargo befahren.
