Wood (spr. wudd), 1) Frau Henry, geborne Ellen Price, engl. Schriftstellerin, geb. 17. Jan. 1814 in Worcester als Tochter eines Fabrikanten, gest. 10. Febr. 1887 in London, heiratete den Reeder Henry W. und gewann mit ihrem ersten Werke: »Danebury house« (1860), den 100-Pfundpreis des Schottischen Mäßigkeitsvereins. Von ihren äußerst zahlreichen Romanen ist »East Lynne« (1861) als ihr bekanntestes Werk zu nennen. Sie schreibt mit lebenswahrer Treue aus dem Mittelstand für den Mittelstand und fand hier ihre weithinreichende und noch andauernde Beliebtheit.

2) Sir Henry Evelyn, engl. Feldmarschall, geb. 9. Febr. 1838 in Cressing, trat 1852 in die Marine und diente in der Seebrigade bei der Belagerung von Sebastopol. Bei dem Angriff auf den Redan 18. Juni 1855 wurde er schwer verwundet, trat dann in die Armee als Fähnrich, zeichnete sich im indischen Aufstand aus, erhielt 1859 ein Regiment irregulärer Reiterei und ward 1862 Major. Im September 1879 nahm er als Oberstleutnant am Aschantikrieg teil. Dann widmete er sich dem Rechtsstudium, wurde 1874 Rechtsanwalt in London, trat aber beim Ausbruch des Sulukriegs wieder in die Armee und befehligte 1879 unter Chelmsford eine Brigade und die »fliegende Kolonne«, mit der er 29. März das befestigte Lager von Kambula Hall verteidigte. Als Generalmajor kommandierte er 1881 die britischen Truppen in Südostafrika bis zur Ankunft Roberts' und 1882 eine Brigade bei der Expedition nach Ägypten. 1883 führte er die ägyptische Armee in dem unglücklichen Feldzuge im Sudân. Von 1889–93 kommandierte er den Militärbezirk von Aldershot und wurde dann zum Generalquartiermeister und 1897 zum Generaladjutanten der Armee ernannt, welches Amt er bis 1901 bekleidete. 1903 wurde er zum Feldmarschall befördert. Er schrieb: »Crimea in 1854 and 1894« (Lond. 1895, 2. Aufl. 1896); »Cavalry in the Waterloo-Campaign« (das. 1895) u. a. Vgl. C. Williams, Life of Lieut. – General Sir H. E. W. (Lond. 1892).
