Reader (engl., spr. rīder, »Leser«), wie in Deutschland etwa Lektor oder Professor, Titel englischer Universitätslehrer (z. B. R. in law, Professor der Rechte), namentlich in Oxford und Cambridge Titel der von der Universität angestellten Lehrer (auch professors genannt), im Gegensatze zu Lecturer, dem Lektor in einem der einzelnen Colleges (s. College). Bei andern Universitäten wird der Titel Lecturer solchen Dozenten gegeben, die zwar Gehalt beziehen, aber nicht Mitglieder des akademischen Senats sind und nicht die Hauptvorlesungen abhalten. – In der Schulsprache bezeichnet R. ein Lesebuch, besonders für Anfänger, entsprechend dem beliebten Titel solcher Bücher: »The English R.«
