Ball (spr. baol), 1) John, Naturforscher und Reisender, geb. 20. Aug. 1818 in Dublin, gest. 21. Okt. 1889 in London, studierte in Cambridge, verfaßte 1863–68 einen »Alpine Guide« in mehreren Bänden (»Central Alps«, »Western Alps«, »Eastern Alps« u. a.), machte 1871 mit Joseph Hooker eine Reise nach Marokko, worüber sie in dem gemeinschaftlich bearbeiteten Werk »Morocco and the Great Atlas« (Lond. 1879) berichteten. 1882 bereiste er Südamerika und schrieb darüber »Notes of a naturalist in South America« (Lond. 1887).

2) Thomas, nordamerikan. Bildhauer, geb. 3. Juni 1819 in Charlestown (Massachusetts), widmete sich anfangs der Malerei und insbes. dem Porträt, sodann der Bildhauerei. Zu diesem Zweck ging er nach Italien, wo er 1854–56 Schüler seines Landsmannes Hiram Powers war. Nach Amerika zurückgekehrt, schuf er die bronzene Reiterstatue Washingtons für Boston. 1865–97 lebte er in Florenz und entwickelte hier eine vielseitige Tätigkeit in monumentalen Porträtstatuen, Genrewerken und Büsten von lebendiger, oft anmutiger Auffassung und gründlicher Durchbildung. Seine Hauptwerke sind die kolossale Marmorstatue des Schauspielers Forrest als Coriolan, das Befreiungsdenkmal der Neger für Washington (Lincoln, einem Sklaven die Fesseln abnehmend), ein Grabmonument (Todesengel) für Boston und die Statue einer Eva.
